Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer in the Golden Retriever

Research Summary

The Golden Retriever is affected with a high incidence of cancer, one out of two according to the Golden Retriever Club of America 1997-1998 National Health Survey. Since the 1980’s, Dr. Jeglum has established and followed a pedigree of Goldens, which shows multigenerational lymphoma and other cancers. Using the established pedigree of Golden Retrievers, this proposal focuses on determining the inheritance pattern of these cancers. Additionally, this proposal will formalize the study of this pedigree by increasing the amount of data available on these animals, including epidemiologic data as well as biological sample collection for DNA. We will contact all available owners for information about the life and health history of the animals in this pedigree. This information will be useful to assess the importance of non-genetic influences on the development of cancer. The pedigree will be analyzed with segregation analysis to determine the mode of inheritance as well as the penetrance of disease and linkage analysis to determine the general location of suspected loci.

Equine Melanoma Autochthonous Vaccine

Since 1997 Dr. Jeglum has offered a vaccine aimed at the treatment of equine melanoma. Melanoma is a disease of melanin cells that are frequently noticed by the owner on the horse's skin, usually around the ears and neck, or the tail and rectum. Grey horses are highly affected by this disease which can cause great discomfort. Please refer to Practices in Equine Medicine __________________ to learn more about this vaccine.

If you are an owner or a practictioner interest in our vaccine, plese contact our research lab at vosrcrearch@hotmail.com, or call (610) 692-6272. Tumor prep is done with only advanced notice, please call for schedule, costs, and shipping specifics.
